RaDiPol – Racism and Experiences of Discrimination in Police Contact

The research project ‘Racism and Experiences of Discrimination in Police Contact’ (RaDiPol) investigates experiences and perceptions of racist and other forms of discrimination by the police in Germany. The three-year project started in Spring 2024 and is funded by the German Research Foundation (DFG). It is a collaborative project between the Department of Criminology and Criminal Law at Goethe University Frankfurt (Main) and the Department of Criminology and Sociology at the Hamburg Police Academy.

The project pursues three main objectives:

Assess

the extent and structure of racist discrimination by the police from the perspective of those affected

Illustrate

the consequences of racist discrimination for those affected including their relationship to the police and society in general

Investigate

the police handling of racism and its significance for police work

To achieve these aims, the project combines quantitative and qualitative methods: a representative survey on the topic will be conducted in several major German cities and supplemented by qualitative interviews with experts (e.g., self-organisations and support actors). This multi-method approach is intended to capture different facets of the perspectives of those affected by police racism and discrimination. In addition, focus groups with police officers will be conducted to gain a better understanding of internal police perspectives on and ways of dealing with the issue.
